The world’s most environmentally friendly cruise experiences

As the popularity of cruises continues to grow, so does the effort to minimize their environmental impact.

Earlier this week, Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess was heralded for its innovative use of liquified natural gas as it docked in Cozumel for the first time.

The Sun Princess is also the largest ship of its class ever built in Italy, at a whopping 178 thousand tons and a capacity of 4,300 passengers.

Natural liquified gas offers several environmental benefits over diesel when used on cruise ships, including considerably lower carbon dioxide emissions, other greenhouse gases and particulate matter.

Even medium-sized traditional cruise ships emit greenhouse gases equivalent to those of 12,000 cars and dump enormous amounts of untreated sewage into the ocean. Photo: Carlos Rosado van der Gracht / Yucatán Magazine

However, just because natural liquified gas is considered more environmentally sustainable does not mean it is perfect, as methane leaks can significantly offset its benefits compared to other fuel sources.

Environmental groups advise seeking smaller cruise vessels committed to sustainability.
