By the end of the present administration, the city will have accomplished 144 facade rescues in the historic center.
Under the municipal renovation program, Programa de Rescate de Fachadas del Ayuntamiento de Mérida, city and property owners cooperate to repair and paint Centro homes that reflect the city’s heritage. Basically, the city provides the labor, the owner provides some or all of the materials, and historic preservation authorities at INAH ensure that the renovation furthers their aesthetic objectives.
A normal month sees four projects completed, but workers have been busy. In May there were seven facade rescues; in June, 9. Since 1995, when the program began, 925 homes have been painted and repaired under the program.
The historic center has 640 properties listed as historical monuments, either because of their importance in the founding of Mérida or for their architectural significance.
