Famous people find serenity and luxury in Yucatán

Mérida, Yucatán — No paparazzi patrol the Paseo de Montejo, and that’s why famous people appear to enjoy it.

In the last five years, this state and capital city became a low-key favorite for luxury tourists.

National and international celebrities, political figures, business leaders, athletes and even royalty have stayed here, reports Milenio Novedades.

Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Chayanne, Ricardo Arjona and Saúl Hernández have been captivated by the wonders that Yucatán offers, and after coming here to work they have chosen to return sporadically to visit tierras yucatecas.

The Guatemalan singer Arjona likes to take refuge once a year, and goes unnoticed when he blends in with other guests in a well-known hotel on Paseo Montejo. But he has been spotted taking evening walks on the iconic boulevard.

Not only figures from the entertainment world choose Mérida, but also Mexican politicians, such as Emilio Chuayffet Chemor, a former governor of the State of Mexico, former secretary of the interior and former director of the election commission. The politician likes to receive the new year in Yucatán, where friends and family live.

As if that were not enough, for a meeting of the well-known international GTO group, which organized a meeting in the city with the ministers of tourism of other countries that make up that organization, the representative of Saudi Arabia turned out to be a prince. That Saudi prince asked to stay a while after the meeting.

A source told Milenio Novedades that the Saudi prince and his security team toured several points of the city discreetly, staying for more days after his event, but went home after a trip to Chichén Itzá was canceled when he was summoned home to get back to work.

Tourism Secretary Saul Ancona Salazar said the luxury tourism model is gaining popularity in Yucatán, driven by influential headline makers.

“Many times these visits go unnoticed, because they request it to the hotels where they stay, but more and more are looking for the city to spend their rest periods,” he said.

The director of Moonlight, after all, told an Oscars audience last year that after the broadcast, he’s heading to Yucatán, and was spotted in Hennessy’s soon after.
