Mérida, Yucatán — With an initial investment of 60 million pesos, the state Secretariat of Communications and Transportation in late October will begin work on updating the Periférico’s access road to Progreso.

The work is part of a larger project to improve the ring road that surrounds Mérida.

The roadway will expand from two to four lanes in each direction.

Almost as noteworthy, the height of the road will be corrected to remove the famous bajadita, the sudden, stomach-churning dip that drivers have complained about.

Traffic will not be detoured during construction, which will be coordinated with state and federal police.

The total estimated cost of the overpass is 200 million pesos, which will be financed through the Federal Expenditure Budget. The project is due to be completed in the second half of 2018.
