Recklessly spreading coronavirus could lead to fines and significant jail time, Yucatan Gov. Mauricio Vila said Sunday.

“We will not allow the health of the Yucatecan population to be put at risk,” Vila posted on his Twitter account. “That is why the person who presents the symptoms or has been diagnosed with the coronavirus and does not abide by the isolation measures to avoid contagion, a punishment may be imposed.”

Up to three years in prison and fines up to MX$86,800 have been established in the state penal code.

“Prevention is everyone’s job!” Vila wrote.

Elsewhere, state police arrested two men who allegedly encouraged looting and vandalizing at Merida’s supermarkets.

The State Investigative Police (PEI) of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP), in coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), executed arrest warrants Sunday for Ángel “N” and Emanuel “N,” who were taken into custody. Police say they are closing in on more suspects who are also inciting similar acts.

The latest numbers

The deputy director of Public Health of the Yucatan Health Secretariat (SSY), Isaac Hernández Fuentes, reported that of 187 suspected cases in Yucatan, 41 were confirmed to be COVID-19. Ten are under hospital care. Eleven patients are in stable condition and recovering in isolation at home.

The other 20 patients have recovered, showing no symptoms and are no longer contagious. Patients range in age from 17 to 78.

Residents with worrying symptoms should call 800-YUCATÁN (800-982-2826), where attendants speak both Spanish and Mayan (not necessarily English). Yucatan’s web page on the subject is at coronavirus.yucatan.gob.mx.
