Flowers in Mexican Culture: Popular exhibit returns to Palacio Cantón

Mérida, Yucatán — Flowers have always figured prominently in Mexico’s artistic expression, as a wide-ranging art exhibit demonstrates.

The Palacio Cantón Museum welcomes back the popular “La Flor en la Cultura Mexicana” on Wednesday night.

The celebration of Mexico’s love of floral imagery has been traveling the country. After first being presented here in 2017, the exhibit opened in the city of Zacatecas and in the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City.

Giovanna Jaspersen, director of the Museo Palacio Cantón; and José Enrique Ortiz Lanz, INAH’s national coordinator of museums, will be in charge of presenting the 320 paintings, sculpture, clothing, pottery and other items, that so far has attracted 235,000 visitors.

The exhibition draws from 47 museum collections, assembling objects under several thematic axes, grouping artifacts from pre-Hispanic times, or relics from the period of the Spanish conquest.

One module presents religious expression, while another examines Romanticism and Modernism, when flowers were meant to communicate love and eroticism.

The last module explores contemporary folk art and traditions such as the Day of the Dead.
