Mérida, Yucatán — State officials joined Leones de Yucatán management to unveil a new look, and some fancy upgrades, for their ballpark.
The first phase of renovation, priced at 30 million pesos, will be ready for the 2016 season, which starts April 3.
The most important upgrade will be the turf: for the players, Tifway 419 Bermudagrass will be underfoot. This particular line of turf has been the most popular sports grass around the world. “Its dense, rapidly spreading growth habit means quick recovery from injury, making it one of the most durable hybrid Bermudas,” according to its distributor. A new irrigation system will keep it green.
The team will also enjoy a coaching complex with batting cages with panoramic windows for fans to catch a glimpse of some “inside baseball.”
For fans, new seats cup holders and more leg room will make extra innings more comfortable.
The facade will have a new look, with a general concourse at the main entrance and lockers on the sides. The interior will feature new dining areas and a playground.
Kukulcán Alamo Park was built in 1982 and has a 16,000-spectator capacity. The Leones, or Lions, is part of the Mexican Baseball League, and when constructed, the complex was considered the their finest stadium.
