A museum dedicated to the work and life of Frida Kahlo will open early next year in Playa del Carmen. It will be only the second museum in the world with a focus on Frida.
Work has already begun in the center of the city, next to the restaurant on Avenida 5 which is named for the iconic painter and poet.
A press conference announcing the new museum was held by Maestra Ofelia Martínez García, general director of Margen Rojo, a company that plans cultural spaces.

Organizers are negotiating to borrow Kahlo’s original works to display. But the museum also plans to open its gallery walls to contemporary artists to reinterpret Kahlo’s work.

The promoters of this project estimate an investment between 25 and 30 million pesos. Tourists can expect to pay between US$10-13 admission; less for local residents.
This will be the third museum on the Riviera Maya; the other two are the Museum of Prehistory near the cenote Dos Ojos in Tulum and the 3D Museum in the Centro of Playa del Carmen.
