Progreso, Yucatán — A $50 million USD fuel terminal on Progreso’s pier is on track to be operational by May.

Hidrosur’s terminal will have the capacity to store 485 thousand barrels of fuel in its 5 tanks.

The plant will have the ability to take in U.S. imports from the other side of the Gulf of Mexico. Government officials have also discussed building a pipeline from Yucatán to Quintana Roo to deliver oil across the peninsula.

In a media tour of the work in progress, Hidrosur Director Eloy Montañez said that 600 employees are working on constructing the plant, which is on a platform attached to Progreso’s massive pier.

Of the workers, 45 percent are Yucatecans, he said, adding that hiring preference was given to local applicants.

Its five tanks will store gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, each with a dike to contain fuel spills.

The plant, the first private operation of its kind locally, increases the port’s hydrocarbon management activity up to 30 percent.
