Furniture maker expands after 1 year in business
Going into his second year of business in Playa del Carmen, a Canadian-born furniture maker says that friends are urging him to expand into Mérida.
Alan Shields, who with partner Ron Hughes is expanding Unique Wood and Iron‘s showroom and workshop on Highway 307, says there has been an unexpected surge in demand for their custom products.
The company, which began last June with Shields, of Playa, in the workshop and Hughes, of Puerto Aventuras, in the showroom, expanded quickly. They recently hired three more employees in the workshop, according to an article in the Pelican Free Press.
Shields, a self-proclaimed inventor, began designing lighting fixtures in Canada then moved into furniture design and production at the urging of a major retailer.
Now, Shields says he’s considering expanding into Mérida, since he’s delivering items here and attracting customers from this side of the Peninsula.
Directions to their store, and a larger gallery of their offerings, are on their website.
