No Comeback: Organizers Scrap Plans for Fyre Festival 2 Mexico

The controversial Fyre Festival 2 Mexico, a promised sequel to a disastrous 2017 attempt at a high-end music event, has been scuttled.

That’s according to recent communications sent to ticket holders. The event was initially scheduled to run from May 30 to June 2 in the Riviera Maya‘s northernmost playground, Playa del Carmen.

Ticket purchasers reportedly received messages stating: “The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”

This attempted revival follows the notorious 2017 Fyre Festival debacle, which collapsed amid numerous logistical failures, including inadequate security, substandard accommodations, food shortages, and insufficient medical services.

Who’s behind Fyre Festival 2 Mexico?

The mastermind behind both events, Billy McFarland, previously served prison time for wire fraud charges connected to the original festival’s catastrophic failure. Despite this history, tickets for the sequel started at $1,400, with VIP packages featuring artist access commanding prices up to $25,000. The most extravagant offering—a $1 million “Prometheus God of Fyre” package—supposedly included luxury yacht accommodations and round-the-clock chauffeur service for a select group of eight attendees.

Questions about the event’s legitimacy emerged earlier when Mexican officials denied knowledge of any such festival. An Isla Mujeres tourism representative stated they had “no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it.”

McFarland attempted to dispel doubts through social media, claiming the festival was legitimate and backed by “incredible partners.” The festival’s official account later contested media reports about a lack of governmental coordination, insisting they had “followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event” in Playa del Carmen.
