Mérida, Yucatán — By the end of the year, some of the 246 gas stations across the state will be transformed into something even more useful.

Many will add on convenience stores, laundries, restaurants and other services open to customers who already stopped by for fuel, said Fernando Quintana Rivera of the Chamber of Commerce.

Gas stations with only one convenience store will soon be in the past, he said. The transformation will begin with six overhauled stations; Quintana Rivera didn’t say which ones.

“When customers arrive, while they are getting fuel for their cars, they can wash their clothes, buy some food, enter a bank and pay for their electricity and drinking water,” he added.

Quintana Rivera said that gas stations with just a convenience store must reinvent themselves to stay competitive.
