Mérida, Yucatán — Waterlogged streets, traffic accidents and blackouts bedeviled various parts of the city during a prolonged rain storm on Sunday afternoon.

These conditions could be prolonged today by the arrival of cold front No. 25, reports Sipse.

Pedestrians and drivers alike proceeded with caution as streets flooded. Sporting events were canceled because of the downpour.

Power failures were reported near the Plaza Grande and various colonias. On social networks, a rumor persisted that a CFE transformer exploded, but Sipse did not verify its validity.

The airport’s meteorological station reported that from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., 16.8 mm/0.66 inches of rain fell. Cinvestav reported 25.8 mm/1 inch of rain, making it the biggest downpour so far this year.

Six of the day’s 10 weather-related traffic accidents were on a stretch of the Periférico between the Progreso bridge and Tizimín exit. One crash involved six cars.

Some cars and motorcycles pulled over on the ring road to wait for the rains to relent.

The National Water Commission says that today a cold front on the Gulf coast and the southeast of the country will bring a trough to the west of the Yucatán Peninsula. Clouds and storms are possible in the south and center of the Peninsula, with partly cloudy conditions and a chance of shower in and around Mérida. Winds today could gust up to 60 kph/37 mph.

A slight drop in temperatures is expected Tuesday.
