Mérida, Yucatán — Calling it a “good start to the week,” Hennessy’s announced being shortlisted in seven award categories, including Best Irish Pub in the Americas.
The award from Irish Pubs Global Federation seeks out places with authenticity, atmosphere and hospitality, among other criteria. Among its competition for the honor are Tir na N’Og in New York City and last year’s winner, The Irish Times in Victoria, B.C.
Hennessy’s, where many patrons go to watch games or enjoy live music, is also a finalist for Best Sports Experience, Best Community Pub, Best Marketing Campaign, Best Entertainment Experience, Best Chef and Best Bar Person.
Winners will be announced at a gala in Galway, Ireland, on Oct. 9.
Since opening on St. Patrick’s Day 2011, Hennessy’s Irish Pub has packed in expats and locals with a large menu of comfort food and beers. Its cozy bar, pool room, central courtyard and rooftop dining quickly won over patrons.
The pub, which architect Henry Ponce made over from an old casona on the Paseo de Montejo, is a hub of activities, from book signings to expat-led political gatherings. In May, Hennessy’s hosted a fundraiser, raising 125,000 pesos for a heart patient’s surgery. Thirty musicians arrived, accepting no payment, for a six-hour session of rock music.
On social media, Hennessy’s local following cheered on the owner, Sean Hennessy..
“I think the biggest reason you are successful is that people LIKE you. And they like you because you are so generous. You make your customers feel welcome… you are always willing to support a cause or help a friend. Congratulations!,” wrote one customer.
