Various buildings in Merida were evacuated this afternoon after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook Jamaica and Cuba.
Although in the Yucatan the tremor was barely noticeable to the general population, occupants on the upper floors of the city’s taller buildings such as Calle 60 hotels and at Country Towers felt a sway, according to local media reports.
Novedades Yucatan interviewed a high-rise occupant whose building’s upper floors were evacuated. She said neighbors remained calm and felt no imminent danger.
Not everyone was high up. A resident in Santa Lucia, who lives in a one-story house, posted a video of her pool water sloshing about.
Civil Protection authorities said no alerts were issued.
The quake was first felt at 1:10 p.m. today off the coast of Jamaica, Cuba and Cayman Islands. Other parts of Mexico feeling its effects were in Veracruz, Quintana Roo and Campeche.
In these states some buildings were evacuated, but no major damage was reported.
Minutes after the earthquake, a tsunami alert was launched in Jamaica, Cuba, Cayman Islands, Belize, Honduras and Mexico.
