Isla Holbox is Quintana Roo’s 1st Certified ‘Queer Destination’
Island paradise joins Los Cabos and Yucatán, which have demonstrated significant advances in tourism inclusion

Isla Holbox made history this week as the first destination in Quintana Roo to receive the prestigious “Queer Destinations” certification, marking a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ tourism in Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

The certification positions Holbox not only as a natural paradise with pristine beaches and rich biodiversity, but also as a progressive destination in human rights and social responsibility.

The international recognition was presented to Christian Stenta, president of the Holbox Hotel Association, during a ceremony that included municipal president Nivardo Mena and representatives from the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council and state Tourism Ministry.

“Queremos que cada persona que llegue a Holbox se sienta libre y segura” (We want every person who arrives in Holbox to feel free and safe), Stenta said during the presentation ceremony.

Growing Movement in Mexico

Holbox joins a select list of Mexican destinations that have been certified as “Queer Destinations,” including Los Cabos and Yucatán. These regions have demonstrated significant advances in tourism inclusion through institutional partnerships and awareness programs.

The certification process requires destinations to meet five specific requirements, with staff training and awareness being among the most important components. Holbox already has 580 certified collaborators, including hotel staff, restaurant workers, and shipping company employees, who are prepared to offer discrimination-free and safe experiences for all visitors regardless of sexual identity or orientation.

The Queer Destinations certification, awarded in collaboration with the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, validates that a destination has adopted practices of inclusion, hospitality and respect toward people of sexual diversity. The certification cost ranges from 200,000 to 250,000 pesos per destination (approximately $10,000 to $12,500 USD) and requires collaboration between local authorities and service providers.

Economic Impact of LGBTQ+ Tourism

The certification comes as the global LGBTQ+ tourism market experiences explosive growth. According to recent industry analysis, the market is expected to grow from USD 296.8 billion in 2023 to USD 634.9 billion by 2033.

The distinction drives certified destinations, as the diversity segment represents an annual expenditure of 4.7 trillion dollars worldwide. The economic spillover benefits the destination’s hotel sector, consumption centers and service providers.

The small island located off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, with a population under 2,000, has no cars and maintains its bohemian charm with sandy streets and colorful murals decorating buildings throughout the town center.

Mexico Leading Regional Efforts

Mexico played a pivotal role in the organization’s journey. In 2019, Queer Destinations partnered with the Mexican Ministry of Tourism to implement LGBTQ+ inclusivity training and certification programs across the country, making Mexico the first country to adopt the Queer Destinations certification.

The collaboration has resulted in 200 tourism organizations completing training throughout Mexico, including destinations like Los Cabos, Cancún and Mexico City. Yucatán was the first Mexican tourist destination to join the “Queer Destinations” initiative in 2020 during the FITUR Madrid Tourism Fair.

Training and Certification Process

The certification requires comprehensive training through the “Hospitality Meets Diversity” program. The program consists of 6 modules and 50 lessons, with an estimated total duration of approximately 180 minutes, covering key concepts about the LGBTQ+ community, including history, challenges and best practices.

More than 150,000 professionals have been sensitized with the Educational Program across 15 countries in Europe, Latin America and the United States, including cities like Madrid, London, New York, Mexico City and São Paulo.

To maintain the certification, participating businesses receive QR code stickers to place in public-facing spaces that invite guests to share their experiences regarding inclusivity. This feedback mechanism allows the organization to continuously support properties in enhancing their inclusivity practices.

Safe Haven for LGBTQ+ Travelers

In contrast with countries like the United States and Argentina, where restrictive policies affect trans people, Mexico presents itself as a more open and inclusive alternative for this type of traveler.

Same-sex marriage is legal in Quintana Roo, and the state has generally maintained welcoming policies toward LGBTQ+ visitors. The island’s relaxed atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and famous whale shark encounters from May to September already attracted diverse international visitors seeking an off-the-beaten-path Caribbean experience.
