Army trucks in the Hotel Zone are inevitably a sign of a high-level meeting happening somewhere, and the last two days were no exception.
Seven governors gathered at the Hyatt Regency, which became heavily guarded to protect its guests. Navy Humvees were in plain sight, but less obvious were the plain-clothes military personnel also in the vicinity, reports Diario de Yucatán. Meanwhile, police officers manually controlled traffic lights at Calle 60 and Avenida Colón. Snipers were stationed strategically on rooftops, as well.
Access to hotel stairs and the parking garage was restricted.
The security meeting, held every three months, included the governors of Tabasco, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán, as well as representatives of the Navy, the Department of National Defense, the Attorney General’s Office and the Center for Investigation and National Security.
A second meeting, which was attended by delegates from federal agencies related to Civil Protection, followed.
