Merida, Yucatan — The city today began increased police surveillance of the Historic Center for the summer holiday period.

More than 400 Municipal Police officers are being added to the Centro patrol beat to watch over national and international tourists. Strategic zones include banks, ATMs, restaurants and transportation hubs.

“We will have permanent bases in bus terminals, as well as the transport lines that have routes to the Yucatecan coast,” said Mario Arturo Romero Escalante, commander of the Municipal Police, who will work in conjunction with the state Ministry of Public Security, Federal Police and the Mexican Army and Navy.

Increased patrols will last until Sunday, Aug. 26, one day before the school year begins for the last of the vacationing students.

A ceremony at the Plaza Grande underscored the plan.

“Mérida is ready to face the surveillance tasks that are presented this summer vacation and we will receive thousands of national and foreign tourists, to whom we guarantee a quiet stay, so they return well to their respective homes,” Mayor Renan Barrera Concha said at the ceremony.

Luis Herrera Albertos, president of the Association of Tourism Promotion Agencies of Yucatan and representative of the Business Advisory Council, called on citizens to take greater responsibility to help make this operation a success.

For example, respect for fellow drivers on the road would be helpful.

“The steering wheel is not a weapon,” said Herrera Albertos.
