Mérida, Yucatán — The city reported that 11 tons of garbage were collected in the Historic Center after last week’s patriotic celebrations.
Thousands of revelers turned out to the Plaza Grande to hear Grammy-winning ranchera singer Pepe Aguilar celebrating Mexico’s el grito for Independence Day on the Plaza Grande this year.
The next morning, a crew of 24 workers with two compactors and a truck collected plastic bottles, wrappers, aluminum cans and other items related to the celebrations.
The holiday was expected to pump roughly 16 million pesos into the economy, up 4.3 percent from last year, as citizens enjoyed a long weekend of travel and dining.
