Low-cost airline Interjet will increase its number of flights to Yucatan starting Nov. 3.
Flights linking Merida to both Mexico City and Havana will raise seating capacity by 16,176 and 2,100 per week, respectively.
The announcement came as Interjet rewarded high-performing travel agencies from the U.S. and Canada with a gala dinner and a tour of Yucatan.
“The collaboration with our strategic partners is one of our great pillars to continue adding positive results, while developing tourism and national and international connectivity. For that and more, we recognize at all times the work and performance of travel agencies,” said Julio Gamero, Interjet commercial executive director.
Interjet’s business with the United States and Canada has grown 26 and 442 percent, respectively, compared to 2018, he said.
Travel agents and packagers were treated to a four-day business and leisure event co-sponsored by Yucatan’s tourism ministry and private-sector businesses that depend on tourism. The awards were presented during a gala at Hermana República in Xcanatún.
In addition to attending business sessions that explained the airline’s growth plans and Yucatan’s tourism offering, travel agents toured various attractions, including Merida’s Historic Center; Uxmal, the ancient Maya city considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture; and the Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca where attendees learned the history of Yucatan gastronomy and sampled recipes.
The budget carrier is Mexico’s third largest airline after Aeromexico and Volaris.
