It’s women players only in this charity polo tournament
Komchen, Yucatán — This weekend’s Copa de Chicas for Charity started out as a small polo tournament, but has become a full-blown social event. The tournament will include a fashion show, food trucks and a silent auction.
Aside from support from local businesses, the Copa de Chicas has attracted big-name sponsors such as Ford, Lincoln and Corona.
But the most striking thing about this polo tournament is the players: They are all women.
Copa de Chicas was created and promoted by Kimmy Davin (also known locally as Kimmy Suki), a longtime resident, business owner and polo player, to raise funds for the Caimede DIF orphanage.
The tournament will make possible 280 gifts for the little residents of the orphanage. Additionally, the event will provide a small coverage of expenses for the art program run by Cy Bor, who like Davin, is an expat from the U.S.
The two teams facing off will be named for two sponsors who are everyday rivals: it’s the Robert Abuda Salon team vs. Kate Miasik Hair Salon team, and players will represent several countries.
On team Abuda are: Veronica Boehm, Alejandra Silviera Puig, Scarlett Gomez, Yanin Manzanilla and Fabienne O´Neill. On team Miasik team are: Davin, Laura Wilson, Yvonne Leszinski and Ivana Manzanilla.
It is rare in Mexico, or any part of the world for that matter, to have female-only teams.
A two-day silent auction will present a wide variety of options such as diamonds, pedicures and three nights in a luxury hotel. Also, a gardening consultant and a baby massage by a licensed masseuse.
A few of the highlighted features are a very generous donation by Ardens Jewelery of two very beautiful pieces of polo jewelry, worth over 35,000 pesos. There will also be two large pieces of art donated by the Italian artist Antonella Pozzo Ardizzi, at a value of 30,000 pesos. In addition, there will be a marketing package by Yucatán Expat Life at a value of over 8,000 pesos, and a three-night stay at Ochenta y Dos, valued at over 16,000 pesos.
On Saturday, a fashion show on horses will feature Martin Lopez of Tócate IAP, the local breast cancer foundation.
A press conference today will officially inaugurate the event. Local news outlets will gather at Hotel Delfina, the new luxury boutique hotel on Prolongación Paseo de Montejo.
Organizers are giving a big thanks to their sponsors: Yucatán Polo Club, Yucatán Expat Life, Arden Jewelers, Conade, Mexican Polo Federations, Camasha, Ford, Lincoln, Ochenta y Dos, Christmas by Christine, Kate Miasik Hair Salon, Robert Abuda Salon, Posheria, Hogar Feliz, Hotel Delfina, Xootrip, Toesta, and all the silent auction donors.
The first annual Copa de Chicas for Charity polo tournament is Dec. 3 and 4 at the Yucatán Polo Club. It all begins Saturday with a bar and food trucks at 2 p.m. Games start at 2:30, and the fashion show on Saturday starts at 4.
