Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital: A Symbol of Unity for 20 years

Twenty years after it opened, the Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital treats children today while building connections that may benefit both nations for future generations.

A modest pediatric hospital in Mérida, Hospital de la Amistad Corea-México represents two decades of medical diplomacy.

The facility opened its doors on July 6, 2005, marking a milestone commemorating Korean immigration to Yucatán. The facility sits on land provided by the Mexican government, with South Korea investing approximately US$1 million in construction costs.

It operates as a public facility, providing free medical services to children from low-income families across the Yucatán Peninsula.

The hospital’s establishment is connected directly to Mexico’s Korean heritage. In 1905, over 1,000 Korean laborers arrived at the port of Progreso, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Mérida, to work on henequen plantations. Many stayed, and their descendants now form part of Mexico’s estimated 30,000-person Korean community.

South Korea has continued supporting the facility well beyond its initial investment. Ambassador visits in 2013, 2016, and 2022 brought additional medical equipment worth tens of thousands of dollars. During a 2022 visit, Ambassador Suh Jeong-In presented certificates for medical equipment valued at over $80,000.

The hospital gained particular prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, playing a significant role in the region’s public health response. Healthcare workers there treated patients while managing the same supply shortages and staffing challenges that affected hospitals worldwide.

Patient testimonials reflect the hospital’s impact on families throughout the region. “I am very grateful for the attention they gave my little angel. Thanks to those nurses for their patience and to the doctors,” wrote one parent in an online review. Another family praised it as “free public medical care for children, a good option for low-income people.”

Recent developments show ongoing cooperation between the two countries in healthcare. In 2024, Mexico joined the International Medical Device Regulators Forum, which includes South Korea among its member nations. The forum aims to harmonize medical device regulations globally.

Mérida’s expanding medical infrastructure has positioned the city as a regional healthcare hub. The Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital sits near other major facilities, including the new Dr. Agustín O’Horán General Hospital, which is under construction and expected to become the largest hospital in southeastern Mexico and Central America.

The hospital’s role extends beyond immediate medical care. The University of Yucatán (UADY) has signed agreements with the facility, creating opportunities for nursing students to gain clinical experience. This partnership helps train the next generation of healthcare workers in the region.

Medical tourism has become increasingly important to Yucatán’s economy, with the state government actively promoting the region as a destination for international patients. The Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital, while focused on serving local children, contributes to the broader reputation of Mérida’s medical sector.

The facility represents something larger than healthcare delivery. It demonstrates how nations can build lasting relationships through practical cooperation. South Korea’s approach to international development cooperation emphasizes connecting with overseas Korean communities while strengthening diplomatic ties.

The hospital’s pediatric focus reflects Mexico’s demographic reality, where children represent a significant portion of the population. By targeting this vulnerable group, the facility addresses both immediate health needs and long-term development goals.

Two decades after opening, the Korea-Mexico Friendship Hospital continues operating with support from both governments. Equipment donations, staff training programs, and diplomatic visits maintain the partnership that created it.
