La Sala Art Gallery Opens New, Larger Space a Block Away
After a decade of bringing contemporary art to Mérida, La Sala Art Gallery is marking a new chapter with a move to Calle 60 in the heart of Centro. The gallery, founded in 2014 by Spanish artist Alfredo Romero and director Laura Garcia, has opened at its new address with an exhibition featuring four international artists.
The location at Calle 60 No. 381A, between 41 and 43 — under the Sipse broadcast tower — represents more than just a change of address that takes them one block north. Garcia and Romero say the move reflects their commitment to making contemporary art accessible while maintaining the intimate, living-room atmosphere that has defined La Sala since its inception.
“We wanted to create a space where people could feel truly welcomed,” Garcia said. “Somewhere they could enjoy art and engage in meaningful conversations as if they were sitting in the living room of a home.”
The gallery’s trajectory over the past 11 years has been marked by steady growth. La Sala has participated in more than 15 art fairs across the United States, introducing Mexican contemporary art to collectors in cities from Miami to Los Angeles. For the inaugural exhibition at the new space, the gallery partnered with Simard Bilodeau Contemporary in Los Angeles to present work by four artists spanning three continents.
Swedish artist Emma Larsson, German painter Rainer Lagemann, Romero himself, and American artist Steve Siegel make up the exhibition. The group show reflects La Sala’s continued focus on international talent working in contemporary styles.
The relocation positions La Sala within Santa Ana, a neighborhood that has emerged as Mérida’s primary gallery district. Within a few blocks, visitors can find SoHo Galleries, Galería Bernardini, and several smaller contemporary spaces. This concentration of galleries has transformed Santa Ana into a destination where collectors and casual viewers can move easily between exhibitions, creating an art-walk culture rarely found elsewhere in Centro.
The physical space may have changed over the years, but Garcia says the gallery’s mission remains constant. La Sala continues to focus primarily on exhibiting Romero’s work alongside artists Garcia and Romero discovered through art fairs and galleries in New York, Seattle, Houston, and now Los Angeles.
Mérida’s art scene has expanded significantly in recent years, establishing the city as a growing destination for collectors and artists. La Sala’s participation in U.S. art fairs positions Yucatecan galleries alongside major international players in what has become a competitive circuit spanning cities across North America and Europe.
