Mérida, Yucatán — Flights for the upcoming weekends from Mexico City to the Yucatecan capital are packed.

With the upcoming celebration of the Hanal Pixán, airlines have switched to larger planes to accommodate passengers.

The director of Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), Hector Navarrete Muñoz, said that the Yucatecan terminal will exceed 2 million visitors this year, 100,000 more than the previous year.

“Our influx of passengers is already high in this year-end straight, so we prepared ourselves by asking airlines to bring us bigger planes because on Fridays and Saturdays we ran out of seats to Merida from Mexico City,” he said.

The airport receives 14 daily flights from Mexico City, around 1,000 passengers on a weekday, and triple that on weekends.

Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport has been in operation for 46 years and connects to numerous cities domestically and abroad.
