LGBTQ+ Artists from the Yucatán Peninsula Gather for New Group Exhibition

Pride month celebrations continue with a group show at a restored art space that’s been shuttered for three years.

Fourteen LGBTQ+ artists from the Yucatan Peninsula will present visual works in various media through the group exhibition “Fuera del Marco: Creadores LGBTIQ+ de la Península” (Outside the Frame: LGBTIQ+ Creators from the Peninsula).

The participating artists are Marisol Castro, Gonzalo Dávila, Fred, Erick de Gorostegui, Osvaa Kaatsim, Ari Lara, Sofía León, Rojo Mecate, Missleto, Mónica Mitre, Elza Reza, Sylvie, Yukari Uzeta, and Milton Zayas.

“Fuera del Marco” brings together works from LGBTQ+ artists across different parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. The collection spans multiple media, including printmaking, video, installations, painting, photography, performance, and textile art.

The exhibition does not focus on explicit narratives tied to gender identity or sexual orientation. Instead, it presents diverse creative voices within the community through an open lens without imposed thematic labels.

“There are many voices and much diversity within the community, and not all art relates to their orientations, preferences, and aspects of gender and sexuality,” explains Débora Carnevali Ramírez, Sedeculta’s head of visual arts. “It’s more about showing the different voices that exist within the community and what they’re doing in visual arts.”

The works represent various styles and aesthetic concerns, positioning art as an open territory rather than a closed category. The exhibition invites viewers to explore creative expression beyond conventional boundaries.

The exhibition will be housed in the restored Galería del Callejón at Teatro José Peón Contreras, downtown Mérida. The opening reception is 7 p.m. Friday, June 27. Entry is free.

This marks the reopening of a gallery space that had been closed since a devastating fire in 2022.
