‘Lunar Bubbles’ light up the Plaza Grande

Mérida, Yucatán — Giant orbs in the Plaza Grande appear to have fallen from outer space. But rest assured, they are the result of worldly ingenuity.

The six bubbles of the “Lunar Garden” is part of the FILUX International Festival of Lights, which debuts at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, March 23) in Mérida. For four nights, shows will predominate up and down the Centro, from the main square, north to La Cúpula Cultural Center. Follow their schedule here.

As they have all over the world, Canadian artists and technicians from Lucion Media created the haunting installation, which they call “Selenita.”

What will the balloons look like tonight? We will have to wait to see. But here are some samples of their past work:

The Picheta Passage, Plaza Grande, Santa Lucía Park, Santa Ana Church, José Peón Contreras Theater, Olimpo Cultural Center and La Cúpula will be stopping points with the cooperation of artists including Katrin Schikora, Óscar Urrutia, Luis Ramírez, Kanek Gutiérrez and students of the Higher School of Arts of Yucatan (ESAY).

FILUX is performed as part of the American Capital of Culture program.
