Merida, Yucatan — The state attorney general’s office reported the arrest of a man, identified only as “Santiago AFL,” for helping a group vandalize a tree in the Plaza Grande.

He was attempting to burn down a tree in Merida’s main square. He also was charged with inciting violence and calling on people to loot supermarkets.

The detainee has a criminal record, including robbery, carrying arms, assault and trespassing, police said.

The suspect will be presented today to the corresponding Control Judge.

Police have been on the watch for signs of social unrest triggered by the panic and hardships suffered under coronavirus contingencies.
