Mérida, Yucatán – In a week, 107 stalls from the historic Lucas de Gálvez market will be set up in temporary quarters while major renovation takes place, a public works spokesman announced.
Since early last week, merchants began the move to nearby Eulogio Rosado Park, just north of the marketplace. Other merchants will be set up between the City Museum and Los Portales.
Tenants complained for years about plumbing, electrical and drainage systems, among other shortcomings, in the crowded markets. Work is expected to finish in August, although tenants are scheduled to return to Lucas de Gálvez in May.
Lucas de Gálvez’s main building was built in 1948. It was featured in a 2008 “Martha Stewart” television show segment when Los Dos’ chef David Sterling gave her a tour.
