Dzityá, Yucatán — More than 100 artisans from Michoacán, Guanajuato, Puebla and Veracruz joined local craftsmen and women in the 17th edition of the Tunich Fair.
The huge annual event brought together national tourists and foreigners, many taking advantage of the free shuttle from the Centro.
The event was inaugurated on July 27 and ended Sunday.
In addition to crafts, visitors were able to enjoy typical Yucatecan food, as well as comedy and musical shows.
Pottery, jewelry, liquors, sweets and various textile products were made available to attendees, who went through the corridors in search of things to decorate their homes or give as a gift.
Some merchants lamented that sales were not as high as expected, as there were many browsers who only took advantage of the free excursion.
Artisan Martha Ortiz, an embroiderer from Tekax, said her time at Tunich was not particularly profitable. A carpenter there for the first time, Veracruz Federico Diaz, said he was satisfied with sales, but stressed the need to have a larger space for stands and visitors.
Residents nearby transformed their properties into parking lots, charging 20 pesos for a spot.
The number of visitors was not available, but evidence of the fair’s popularity came from traffic jams, especially at night, that formed around those improvised parking lots.
