The mayor of Merida was in China and the governor of Yucatan was in New York City this week, both promoting tourism and investment back home.
“We had the opportunity to talk with mayors of more than 20 cities around the world at the 2019 Innovation Forum for Mayors in Chengdu,” said Mayor Renán Barrera. “We are learning a lot on this working tour, where we will get very important agreements for Merida.”
Merida is a sister city of Chengdu, and Barrera was the only mayor from Mexico to speak, although 70 cities from 65 countries were represented at the summit.
He emphasized Yucatan’s plans for both natural gas distribution and the clean-energy production. A company from China built a recent solar-energy farm in Dzilam de Bravo.
Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal participated in the North American Leaders Forum in Manhattan. The forum held by World Travel & Tourism Council, a London-based organization that represents the travel and tourism private sector globally.
Vila Dosal met with Ninan Chacko, director of Travel Leaders Group, one of the largest companies of its kind in North America, representing 50,000 travel agencies and generating sales of US$21 billion.
He also met with Arnold Donald, CEO of the Carnival cruise line, which last year took 411,387 passengers to Yucatan.
Certares CEO Tom Klein, representing a Luxembourg-based asset management fund, also took a meeting with the governor. Along with the American Express Global Business Travel, Certares owns the Travel Leaders Group, the AmaWaterWays river cruise company and the French tour operator Marietton Developpement.
Vila Dosal also gave interviews with Travel Weekly and travAlliancemedia, as well as the Chinese news agency Xinhua, and participated in the panel “Build the Destinies of Tomorrow,” where he explained the qualities for which Yucatán stands out as a tourist destination and a place to invest.
The governor returns to Yucatan today.
