A direct flight connecting Toronto and Merida returns Nov. 26 and will continue into April, said airport manager Héctor Navarrete Muñoz.

The Westjet flight is the only nonstop between Ontario and Yucatan, lasting around four hours. The initial trip was priced at around CN$600 for a round trip. The flights are on Tuesdays only.

WestJet began seasonal Yucatan routes in 2015. Previously a traveler from Toronto would typically land in Cancun and take a bus to their final destination, or connect in Mexico City.

Daily Cuba route

Building on the Merida airport’s international presence, Interjet will add a new flight to Havana this month, said Navarrete Muñoz.

Navarrete Muñoz, general director of the Asur management group, stressed that November will be a very positive month for Mérida’s air terminal. The new routes will bring even more activity to the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport, which has already exceeded the two million passengers so far this year.

The Merida-Havana route, previously just Sundays and Thursdays, will run daily starting Sunday.

This will increase the flow to more than 2,000 passengers, who will be offered low-cost fares. Since 2009, when Interjet began operating in Cuba, almost 23,000 passengers have traveled to the island.

Navarrete Muñoz hailed the new Canadian flight, which will benefit expats and snowbirds, as well as tourists, from the north.

Navarrete Muñoz also announced that for Hanal Pixán, more than 1,500 mucipollos or “pibs” were transported through the airline to different regions of the country. Mexico City was the main destination, followed by Veracruz, Villahermosa and Oaxaca.
