Five months in, 40 percent of the work is already completed at the new Oxkutzcab-Teabo and Tzucacab-Peto overpasses, easing travel between Mérida and the Belize border.

The project is part of the modernization and expansion of the Merida-Chetumal road. It is being carried out in coordination with the municipalities of Teabo and Peto and the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), which is responsible for the relocation of surveillance cameras placed at both junctions.

Chetumal is 383 km south of Mérida. It is nearly a five-hour drive to the coastal Caribbean city in the south of Quintana Roo.

At Oxkutzcab-Teabo, 10 of 20 columns needed for an overpass at km 70 of the Merida-Chetumal highway are already in place.

Four of 10 columns have been planted at the Tzucacab-Peto bypass at kilometer 120.5.

The project has generated 400 jobs directly, and 800 indirect jobs, such as delivery workers.

The work required an investment of 92 million pesos at Oxkutzcab-Teabo and 57 million pesos at Tzucacab-Peto.

Overpasses will make travel safer for drivers, particularly the residents of nearby towns including Tzucacab, Peto, Chumayel, Teabo, Oxkutzcab, Ticul, Mani and Tekit.
