A hospital nurse who died from COVID-19 was given a sendoff complete with mariachi music at the hospital where he worked.

Roger Melchor Zunza Matey, 47, worked at the High Specialty Regional Hospital of Mérida (HRAE), one of the main medical centers in Yucatan to treat coronavirus.

A colleague, Rosa Estela Sánchez Quinta, said Zunza Matey was beloved at HRAE, where he had worked for nine years. He was not just efficient, but also friendly, helpful and kind, she told Diario de Yucatan.

“He was a good companion and friend,” said Rosa Estela, who shared videos of the musicians honoring the late caregiver before his body was sent to the Xoclán cemetery for cremation.

Roger was single and left no children, she said.

The DePeso news site said at least eight other colleagues are also infected with the virus.

On Monday, the IMSS announced the coronavirus-related death of a nurse who worked at the Benito Juárez Hospital, said DePeso.
