Merida, Yucatan — More than 50 sites with collection boxes have been set up so citizens can pay their property taxes in time to get a 20 percent discount.
Homeowners have until Thursday to save that much on the predial. In February, the discount will be reduced to 10 percent, and to 8 percent for the month of March.
The city’s property tax-collection goal of 500 million pesos would exceed the 470 million collected last year.
The Ayuntamiento depends on tax collection to maintain public services. So they encourage tax payers to follow through on time. And they offer numerous payment options.
Another incentive is a free insurance against theft or fire, under the Casa Segura (Safe House) program. The policy takes effect the day after payment is received and is active until the last day of the year.
In the Yucatecan capital, 65 percent of 322,577 residential properties pay on time and receive this benefit.
Retirees, pensioners, seniors and people with disabilities receive further discounts, ranging from 50 to 100 percent.
A 100 percent subsidy applies to properties with cadastral value of up to 345,000 pesos; 75 percent for properties from 345,000 to 470,000 and 50 percent for properties from 470,000 to 725,000 pesos.
Punctual property tax payers also get another 15 percent discount if they have green roofs or solar panels.
In addition to the tax-collection boxes installed in the Municipal Palace colonnade, there are 53 boxes scattered about the city. (Map here.)
Chain stores Oxxo, Dunosusa and Willys stores also take payments. Electronic transfers are possible at Bancomer, Banamex, HSBC and Scotiabank, or homeowners are invited to visit the merida.gob.mx website.
