Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito markets, the city’s two largest mercados, will close at 3 every afternoon while the Merida City Council further attempts to stem the spread of coronavirus. The shortened hours start today.

The markets open at 6 a.m, three hours later than it previously welcomed shoppers.

The restrictions are an addition to the state curfew restricting road traffic from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Non-essential market sales will be banned on weekends, but basic foods — meats, fruits and vegetables — can be sold seven days a week. Minors, the elderly or pregnant women barred from entry, and customers who do make it in are asked to shop solo.

Face masks are mandatory and lines may form at entrances while market crowding is avoided.
