Mexico brings home cremated remains of COVID victims who died in U.S.
Mexico will repatriate some 200 urns containing the cremated remains of coronavirus-infected nationals who died in the United States.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) said a special flight Saturday from New York to Mexico City will be the beginning of a journey in which remains are reunited with loved ones. The urns will travel on a Mexican Air Force aircraft with the cooperation of the Consulate General.
State governments will help transfer of the urns to their final destination at Baja California, Campeche, Chiapas, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.
As of June 29, an estimated 1,513 Mexicans with COVID-19 have died in the United States.
“The Government of Mexico reiterates its condolences to the families who have lost a loved one abroad and expresses its commitment to assist them and provide them with the necessary protection and information in the face of the global pandemic,” the SRE announced.
