Progreso, Yucatan — The state has allocated 60 million pesos for infrastructure projects in this struggling port city. Then, more funds are promised from the federal government.

Money will go towards underground wiring and street improvement, as well as for the remodeling of the Casa de la Cultura, announced Gov. Mauricio Vila Dosal.

Residents and business owners have argued for years that the city’s image is shabby to cruise-ship tourists and other visitors, on whose income they depend.

But the new administration has offered plans to upgrade Progreso’s streets and sites. Now the state has joined in that effort.

Vila Dosal said he has negotiated with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for a 2020 budget of between 300 and 500 million pesos. Those funds will address both tourists and residents with everyday needs such as schools, drinking water and electricity, he stressed.

Progreso receives 128 cruise ships and 440,000 tourists annually, “but to have more cruise passengers, we need to have better infrastructure,” said the governor.

The 60 million pesos from the state will be used to renovate the cultural center and to build a plaza with green space and a recreational area. It also goes toward a modernization of Calle 80, from the end of the pier to Calle 27, and for the walkway along the beach known as the malecon. Power lines will be buried and trees will be planted along the roadside.

The budget doesn’t address a long-proposed overpass for pier traffic to bypass the city when reaching the Merida highway.
