Progreso, Yucatán — The number of cruise ship arrivals at the port of Progreso will increase in October, with 11 pleasure boats expected this month.

The Carnival Cruise Line will continue to send the gigantic Valor to Yucatán’s famous four-mile pier, joining its sister ships Triumph and Fantasy.

Valor carries more than 3,600 passengers and 1,300 crew, who stop at the port between a stop in Cozumel and at its home port of Galveston, Texas.

That compares with the New Orleans-based Carnival Triumph’s 3,300 passengers and 1,075 crew and the Mobile, Ala.,-based Fantasy with 2,270 passengers and 970 crew.

According to information from the Integral Port Administration, arrivals will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays as usual, but there will also be arrivals on Monday, Oct. 8 and Oct. 22, meaning those weeks Progreso will receive an onslaught of tourists on three different days.

The Valor, which began regular Progreso stops in August, has gradually increased its arrivals.

Given this, the Malecon is preparing for more business. Merchants told Sipse, however, that if the city doesn’t address safety and cleanliness issues, visitors will go elsewhere. The cruise line offers its passengers a variety of excursions that would whisk them past Progreso’s shops and restaurants. Passengers can visit Mérida or the Maya civilization archaeological sites of Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun, for example.

Cruise ship stops are expected to further increase this fall and winter, Sipse reports.
