Mérida, Yucatán — Music teachers from ESAY, Yucatán’s Higher School of Arts, will lead a series of concerts intended to raise money for their institution.

The program is the initiative of teachers, who will cover several genres in the series, reported Elías Puc Sánchez, ESAY academic coordinator.

The first concert, featuring jazz music, is 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas, Calle 61 between 50 and 52.

Called “Tour Nocturno,” or  “Night Tour,” the event will feature Arturo Guzmán, the author of the song that gives the concert its name, as well as Armando Martín, Edgar Boffill, Alberto Palomo, Osmani Collado, and as a guest singer, Malena Durán. The latter has collaborated with ESAY on several occasions, both in concerts and academically.

Durán will perform “La llorona,” a popular Mexican song, “Más que nada,” a Brazilian song, and “My Funny Valentine,” a show tune from the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart musical “Babes in Arms.”

Musicians will interpret jazz standards with arrangements from the teachers. “Take Five,” “Now’s The Time” and “Spain” are some of the songs that will be included in rhythms such as swing, bossa and funk.

The entrance fee is 100 pesos, 50 pesos for students. Tickets can be reserved at 999-920-7953.

The concert series will continue with five other presentations between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15, also including ESAY teachers and outstanding students.
