Don’t go for the perfect fitness plan at the expense of a good one that you’ll actually stick with

Long-term health and fitness aren’t about following trends or doing what others say is “the best” exercise. It’s about consistency and finding joy in movement. 

Many people struggle with the misconception that they must engage in the most intense workouts to see results. This mindset can be discouraging, especially if the chosen activities are not enjoyable. The truth is, the best exercise is the one you will stick with consistently. It’s more beneficial to have a moderate routine you enjoy and can maintain over time than an intense regimen you dread and are likely to abandon.

Consistency is the No. 1 factor in forming a habit. It’s not about how extreme the workout is but how regularly you do it. Establishing a routine with activities you look forward to ensures you stick with it in the long run. This is the idea of not letting the great get in the way of the good. 

Any activity that gets you moving and brings you joy can contribute to your fitness journey. 

Finding activities you enjoy can transform exercise from a chore into a pleasurable part of your day. If you love being outdoors, consider walking, cycling, or paddle boarding. These activities allow you to enjoy nature while keeping your heart rate up. Walking, in particular, is often overlooked. Many people think they need to run to stay healthy, but walking provides numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, reduced stress, and enhanced mood, all while being gentle on the joints.

For those who enjoy social interaction, joining a fitness class can be highly motivating. Whether it’s a dance class, a team sport, or a yoga session, the social element can enhance your commitment and make the experience more enjoyable. The camaraderie and support from others can be a significant factor in maintaining a regular exercise routine.

If you prefer more structured workouts, consider strength training or bodyweight exercises. These can be done at home, in a gym, or outdoors. Strength training is essential for building muscle, improving bone density, and boosting metabolism.
