Now at yellow, Cancún hotels double their top occupancy

Hotels in Cancún and Riviera Maya are now able to fill their rooms at 60% capacity.

The same policy applies to restaurants and beaches and nightclubs in the state of Quintana Roo.

The doubling of allowed occupancy was justified by authorities by pointing out that Quintana Roo now stands at “yellow” on the national epidemiological traffic light. 

Hotels in Cancún are booking rooms at roughly 43%, while the Riviera Maya stands at 25% and Cozumel at 38%, according to Quintana Roo’s hotel association.

There are currently 71,000 domestic and international tourists in Quintana Roo, say state tourism officials. 

International travelers arriving in Mexico are required to fill out an online health check and show proof of completion via a QR code that they would have received. Passengers on all aircraft and land vehicles must wear a face mask at all times and submit to fever checks.  

Tourism in Mexico is an extremely important industry, representing 8.8% of the country’s total GDP in 2018.

Mexico’s business council calculates that losses to the tourism sector due to COVID-19 stand at $US13 billion for 2020 alone.
