Cancun, Q. Roo — A fifth terminal at the Cancun International Airport won’t be built until Terminal 4 expands.

“Before we start it, we will see at least three extensions in T4 — one is already underway,” announced Carlos Trueba Coll, general manager of the Cancún airport.

T4, as the fourth terminal is called, was unveiled last fall at Mexico’s second busiest airport, with an estimated 31 million passengers per year. The 18-gate expansion cost 3.4 billion pesos/US$177 million.

ASUR, the management group, promised an investment of 5.8 billion pesos between 2019 and 2023 as the airport expands and upgrades.

There is plenty to do before a T5 is built. Older terminals are regularly overwhelmed with passengers at the airport.

“There will be an expansion and improvement of the international arrivals area in T2, primarily in the areas of Migration, Customs and the international arrivals hall; we also have an expansion and improvement in the arrivals area of T3; in this five-year period we would be expanding the T4,” said Trueba Coll.

Improvements in equipment, facilities, airport security as well as a new runway are in the works. No start date has been given for a previously proposed hotel. Work will be at its most intense in 2020, if previous-year planning works out, he said.

Asked about the Mayan train project, Trueba Coll said he would coordinate with the federal government to possibly integrate the service.
