Mérida, Yucatán — For the penultimate 2017-18 program — and the final symphonic concert — musicians at the Peón Contreras are tackling their most ambitious work of the season.
The Yucatán Symphony Orchestra presents Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, a profound and monumental work that premiered in Leipzig in 1884.
This weekend’s two performances will be dedicated entirely to this “musical miracle,” as described by OSY conductor Juan Carlos Lomónaco.
This is the first time the OSY has interpreted Bruckner’s best-known work. In fact, the symphony is rarely performed because the 60-minute symphony is so very demanding on its orchestra, said Lomónaco. Brahms called Bruckner’s masterpieces “symphonic boa constrictors,” for its all-encompassing effect on audiences.
The concert is 9 p.m. Friday and noon Sunday. Tickets are on sale at the José Peón Contreras theater box office and at www.sinfonicadeyucatan.com.mx .
As it normally does, the symphony season later concludes with an opera. This time, it’s Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a drama in two acts. Five performances are scheduled between June 15-23.
