Mérida, Yucatán — With images captured under the waters of the Peninsula’s cenotes, Dutch photographer Lianne Strik captures another world.
An exhibition of her work was inaugurated Thursday night at the El Zapote Gallery, Calle 57 No. 545 A, between 66 and 68, Centro.
The exhibition presents the female figure in aesthetic compositions that evoke Greek deities, which is why Strik calls the show “Nereidas.”
The work represents three years’s of creative output, experimenting with different landscapes and models. The show remains on view until March 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; admission is free.
Presented in medium format, the collection is made up of nine pieces taken digitally, but aren’t retouched. Strik also shunned artificial lights when taking these photos.
Both the artist and her models are from outside Mexico; one of them didn’t even know how to swim. They bring an outsiders’ point of view to the Mayan culture.
Strik, who has almost two decades of photography experience, enjoyed diving expeditions around the world; later she enrolled in a photography school in New York.
She lives today in Valladolid and exhibits across Mexico and in Montreal and Tokyo.
