Mérida, Yucatán — One city park now has a corporate sponsor.
Oxxo, the convenience store chain, will invest about 200 million pesos over the next five years to maintain Parque Flamboyanes in Col. Juan Pablo II, west of the city.
The commitment includes planting trees, irrigation, pruning, repair and painting.
The agreement, signed by Mayor Mauricio Vila Dosal and Oxxo’s Mérida-Campeche regional director, José Adalberto Zumárraga Novelo, also includes a donation of goalposts, benches, tables, umbrellas and garbage containers; renovation of the basketball court and even organizing recreational, cultural, educational and sports activities.
The spirit of the agreement, according to the City Council, is to address the needs of the community by involving socially responsible companies.
Zumárraga Novelo said that since its inception in 1977, the Monterrey-based company has focused on meeting the needs of its customers.
“We seek to be good neighbors within the environment in which we operate, showing our commitment, participating in projects that have an impact on the community,” he said in a ceremony in which a plaque commemorating Oxxo’s participation was unveiled.
The mayor said that Oxxo is the first company to join the Adopting Public Spaces project and the Green Infrastructure Plan, in which it planted trees in front of its own stores.
