Mérida, Yucatán — More than 100 altars will mark the time of Dia de Muertos in the Centro Histórico.

Regional theater actors will recreate the tradition and mysticism of the celebration of the Day of the Dead during the Ceremony of the Hanal Pixán on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Plaza Grande will be the scene of 110 altars representing 69 municipalities and 41 communities, as well as educational institutions and civil society organizations.

It begins at 6:30 p.m. with a Funeral Procession that will begin at Parque Santa Ana and head down Calle 60 to at the Pasaje Revolución, between the Cathedral and the Macay museum.

Over 200 students from the Ermilo Abreu Gómez Art Education Center will take part.

The Yucatan Youth Folklore Ballet, directed by Luz María Gómez Ac, will be accompanied by music by Jabranera of the Mayab Orchestra, led by Felipe de Jesús Chi Naal, as well as the Colitos Band.

A performance by Mario and Daniel Herrera Casares, better known as “Dzereco” and “Nohoch,” will give way at 7:30 p.m. with the play “Delirio Teatral,” which is described as a comedy with a touch of drama.

The story will tell what happens when the catrina and mestiza skulls, played by Alejandro Güémez “Doña Chela” and Iván Vázquez “La Puruxona Cauich,” respectively, visit homes of various social levels.

Jazmín López “Tina Tuyub,” told reporters at a media event Monday that student involvement in this tradition began in the 1980s as a school activity before growing into the large event it is today.

The director of Art Education Center Cedart, Yolanda Tamayo Campos, agreed with screen writer Aldo Pasqual, that both the parade and performances will entertain audiences and educate them about local customs.
