Mérida, Yucatán — New, modern traffic lights are coming to areas that need them most, said Gerardo Ojeda Sosa, head of Transit Engineering at the state’s Public Security Secretariat (SSP).

One new set of lights has a signal for pedestrians who want to cross a busy road at Altabrisa. And cameras will detect traffic flow, keeping the green light flashing longer when there are more cars passing through.

Ojeda Sosa blames cellphone use for most of the accidents that occur in Altabrisa, particularly at the wide boulevards Calle 15 and 20. The width of the street is also bewildering to drivers going in different directions.

Three intersections in Altabrisa are getting the lights, which are still under construction. Poles will go into the ground in about a month, the official said.

Traffic lights requested by residents of Cholul and Sitpach are also ready, and for now work intermittendly to allow drivers to become accustomed to them, he said.
