Sunwings is flying direct from northern Ontario to Cancun.

Thunder Bay, Ont. — Sunwing is planning a direct Ontario-Cancun route by the end of the year.

The airline has been flying direct to Veradero, Cuba, for the past five years. A spokesman for Thunder Bay International Airports Authority said direct flights to sun destinations by other airlines may be announced.

Sunwing said its Cancun passengers will be able to start their vacation with wine and a meal and enjoy free checked baggage with a 20-kilogram limit.

“Stretching down Mexico’s sparkling Caribbean coastline for 150 kilometres as far as Tulum, Cancun and Riviera Maya are amongst the most popular tourism destinations in the Americas,” Sunwing said in a media release.

“As well as being home to fabulous resorts, they also rank as top ecotourism centers with lots to see and do for all ages at local eco parks — from snorkeling to horseback riding.

“This is also the land of the Mayans and there are many places to visit to see glimpses into this ancient civilization.

“We are delighted to be able to offer a second Sunwing service to the sun from Thunder Bay this coming winter,” said Andrew Dawson, chief operating officer, Sunwing Travel Group. “Cancun and the Riviera Maya are amongst our most popular tourism destinations and have much to offer vacationers, so we are sure that this new route will be embraced.”

“We are excited by Sunwing’s demonstration of additional confidence in our market,” added interim president and CEO of Thunder Bay International Airport Authority, Ed Schmidtke.

“Our market has a positive history of supporting Sunwing and we look forward to a successful 2015/16 winter campaign.”

Sunwing offers three exclusive resort options when vacationing in the Riviera Maya.
