Mérida Yucatán — Municipal police have been handed keys to two more electric patrols cars.

With the new Renault Twizys, the police now have six little two-seaters, which don’t require gas and don’t pollute the air.

Mérida was the first city in Latin America with electric patrol cars back in February when the mayor gave police its first four vehicles. They are used to patrol the often narrow streets of the Centro Historico, saving on fuel costs while giving police a more agile ride in traffic.

The cars have proven their value in the Middle East and Europe.

Police in Dubai have used Twizy for over four years, and they reportedly value the vehicles for their ability to traverse narrow streets. In Valencia, Spain, Twizys patrol pedestrian malls for the same reasons.

The cars came with a charging station at the main police station. The station is free and open to the public.

They are two electric cars together cost 725,400 pesos.

They are part of the same Mérida’s environmental policy that has bolted 256 solar panels to the Municipal Palace roof and planted 60,000 trees throughout the city.
