Popular Restaurant Week extended a day

Mérida Restaurant Week has been extended a day.

Mérida, Yucatán — Seven days is not enough time for Restaurant Week this year.

In the city’s second annual gastronomic promotion, the deals will continue through Monday, a bonus day for chowhounds eating on the cheap. The promotion is grounded in one easy concept: three-course fixed-priced meals for 109 pesos.

Restaurant owners said in a press release that public response has exceeded expectations. They expect one of their best nights yet tonight.

Just how well this year is going won’t be known until after Monday. But last year, the first-ever Mérida Restaurant Week saw 600,000 diners spent $60 million pesos.

Now a worldwide phenomenon, Restaurant Week started in New York City as a lunch-only proposition in the early 1990s, when office workers got to eat at places like “21” for $20. But until now Restaurant Week has not been a big hit in Mexico.

A mobile app available on Google Play and the Apple App Store contains a list of restaurants, maps and menus.
